Riding the Chariot

  1. RIDING THE CHARIOT - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears in the book, "Whispers in the Night," by Basil Copper.

As I mentioned in the commentary of an earlier drawing, artists have to learn when to stop, to decide when a drawing or a painting is "done". I was surprised when I read in a book, "Trivia for Reading While Sitting On a Toilet Seat," that Leonardo da Vinci was one of those artists who was never able to "stop" painting a picture.

His famous painting, "Mona Lisa" was not finished. (Mona means "Lady". The painting is also known as "La Giaconda". "Giaconda" is her married last name). Near the end of his life da Vinci told a friend that he regretted never having finished any of his paintings.

By the way, that trivia book also included this statement about the famous artist, Michelangelo; "During the four years that it took him to paint the ceiling in the Sistine Chapel, 1508 - 1512, he never took a bath" - Now how would anyone know that? And why would Michelangelo tell that to anyone? And why would anyone back then record that bit of trivia for future generations to know?

However, I have read in several history books that people in those days did not bathe very often. So . . .
